Five outstanding University of Newcastle undergraduates have received prestigious scholarships under the Australian Government’s New Colombo Plan to study in the Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Korea.

As the top-ranked student in her host location of the Philippines, Bachelor of Development Studies student Lisa Butson was also named a New Colombo Plan Fellow.

Ms Butson said the scholarship was a dream come true. She will use her time to study water and wastewater management.

“A key issue for development in the Philippines, as in many parts of the world, is water. Access to clean water, proper sewage and sanitation are issues faced by many countries. I want to learn how to improve these conditions,” she said.

University of Newcastle pro-vice chancellor, International and Advancement, Winnie Eley, said the scholars were inspirational students, who would contribute to the advancement of knowledge in fields of global relevance.
