DESN1000 level – First Year Design
First Year Visual Communication Design is about becoming a fan of design in all its forms, and developing an awareness of the principles and skills that underpin our field.
We recognise that the diversity of our first year cohort is reflected in their different levels of exposure to design. Knowing this, we have developed a program that is open and flexible enough to develop design expertise from the fundamental through to the specialist and hybrid, and structured enough to provide distinctive levels of educational experience suited to each stage of an emerging designer’s skills, experience and professionalism.
At first year level, the aim is to develop an understanding of the underlying visual design skills and approaches, (such as visual thinking and visual research), that are eventually used in professional design practice. We explore drawing, photography, typography, and professional design practice through working on practical projects and creative design briefs. The emphasis is placed on forms of image making, visual analysis, and visual design as a way of exploring a foundational visual vocabulary and establishing visual literacy in a creative design context.
